Producer tried to edit Bible out of feel-good film (Soul Surfer)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Tom Hamilton prayed for the best but expected the worst. He and his family, all devoted Christians, thought they had lost their bid to keep an overt reference to the Bible in the upcoming film "Soul Surfer."
The movie is the true story of Hamilton's daughter Bethany, who, at age 13, had her arm chewed off by a tiger shark in Kauai but returned to her board to pursue her dream of becoming a pro surfer.
When religious leaders were shown an early version of the Sony movie, set for release on April 8, the words "Holy Bible" had been digitally removed from the cover of the book in a scene depicting Hamilton reading in a hospital where his daughter was fighting for her life. Hamilton says producer David Zelon, an executive at Mandalay Pictures, had lobbied to tone down the film's Christianity in an effort to broaden its appeal to non-Christian audiences. But the Hamilton family objected, and when they attended a subsequent screening, they were pleasantly surprised with what they saw.
"I could see the words bright and clear," Hamilton says.
"I looked at my wife and whispered, 'Thank you God, they put it back.'"
(Zelon declined comment. Says Sony in a statement, "This movie has a strong spiritual core, much like "The Blind Side," and while one of the versions tested did have the scene in question, it was never unclear that the book was the Bible.")
The dust-up over "Soul Surfer" illuminates Hollywood's increasingly awkward dance with the faith-based community. After years of neglecting religious audiences, studios now know that appealing to the Christian-values set while also bringing in more secular crowds can lead to an across-the-board blockbuster like "Blind Side" (domestic box office: $256 million).
But flub the combination -- by appearing to pander, for example -- and the movie doesn't work for anybody.

Carrie Underwood In 'Soul Surfer': Pics From Set
Via Yahoo! Music...Fans of Carrie Underwood's budding acting career won't have too much longer to wait for her silver-screen debut. The singer's first film, Soul Surfer, is set to hit theaters April 8.
Soul Surfer chronicles the life of Hawaiian surf champion Bethany Hamilton, who lost her entire left arm in 2003 as a result of a shark attack in her home waters of Kauai. The teenaged Hamilton overcame her injury through perseverance and her strong Christian faith, and continues to surf and serve as an inspirational public figure today.
Underwood portrays Sarah Hill, the youth group leader at Hamilton's church, who provides invaluable support as the young surfer struggles with her loss. The real-life Hill is still a youth minister and has been working with junior- and senior-high students on Kauai for more than a decade.
Soul Surfer has a satellite site geared as a ministry resource for churches and faith-based youth groups, which has posted some photos straight from the movie's set for fans to take a look at. Here's a few of Underwood in action; you can see all the photos here.

Soul Surfer Updates

Carrie Underwood dazzled millions on the small screen as she competed on 'American Idol,' and eventually was named the season's winner in 2005, so there's no telling how big of an impact she'll make on the silver screen. The newlywed will make her film debut in the upcoming flick, 'Soul Surfer,' but while most star-studded movies premiere in packed theaters, Carrie's will take place in sanctuaries.
The movie, based on the true story of 13-year old Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a surfing accident, is a tale of fierce faith and determination. Because of the positive message geared to audiences of all ages, free previews of the movie are being offered to select church audiences, in hopes that their rave reviews and praise for the flick will help fill movie seats when 'Soul Surfer' is officially released on April 15.
Carrie, who brushed up on her acting chops by guest-starring on 'How I Met Your Mother,' is pleased with her performance in the movie, but has no plans of trading her microphone for a script anytime soon. "There are people that are absolutely amazing actors and actresses, and I am not one of those, though who's to say one day; you never know, maybe I will be," she tells ABC. "But I'm definitely new at this and just doing what's fun right now, and I love my music; that's my first love."

The Golden Globe nominee wrote and sang 'There's a Place for Us,' which can be heard during the closing credits of the blockbuster hit, 'Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.'

Release Date for "Soul Surfer" Set
FilmDistrict, the new distribution company under the GK Films umbrella, will release “Soul Surfer,” the true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, as its first film.The movie, which stars Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, AnnaSophia Robb and Carrie Underwood in her film debut, will hit theaters nationwide on April 15. Hamilton survived a shark attack, in which she lost her left arm. In 2003, she returned to surfing, winning the ESPY Award for best comeback athlete of the year the following year.
Directed by Sean McNamara, “Surfer” was independently financed by Enticing Entertainment and Island Film Group, and is a production of Mandalay Vision, Brookwell McNamara Entertainment and Life's A Beach Entertainment.
The screenplay, based on Hamilton's memoir “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on the Board,” was written by McNamara, Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Deborah Bonann Schwartz, with additional writing by Ron Bass, Jen Smolka and Kara Holden.
The film, shot on location in Hawaii, was produced by David Zelon, Douglas Schwartz, David Brookwell, McNamara and Roy "Dutch" Hofstetter, and executive produced by David Tice and Dominic Ianno.
“Steve Bersch and I immediately responded to the honesty of Bethany's story and its universal message of courage and perseverance,” said Peter Schlessel, CEO of FilmDistrict, who initiated and approved the production with Bersch while at Sony, and then forged the partnership between Sony and the newly formed FilmDistrict for release of the film.
“It's the perfect family film for the spring break season,” Bob Berney, Film District theatrical distribution president said.

Carrie Underwood pleased with foray into film

Carrie Underwood's followed the lead of many a country superstar (Tim McGraw, Toby Keith) and made her way into film with upcoming feature Soul Surfer. She told the Associated Press that while she surprised herself as far as acting chops go, fans shouldn't expect her to ditch the job that made her famous any time soon.
"I'm definitely new at this and just doing what's fun right now, and I love my music; that's my first love," she said.

But after a recent screening of the upcoming movie Soul Surfer, Underwood found she wasn't as bad as she thought she'd be.
"I really liked how everything turned out, including myself," Underwood said in an interview Tuesday. "I was really expecting the worst from myself, and I really surprised myself."
